Family Portrait, Around Retirement Time
[RP] No notes from Dad, but this was taken around 1955 in Laredo, I believe. This is the closest I have to Dad's retirement portrait, which is missing from the album but which I remember well, as I used to look at it often with pride. He retired in the Spring of '59 at Barksdale at the rank of Major, which he held since February '53. I recall him saying that he could have retired as a Colonel if he had been willing to take some alternate assignment, which he described but which I unfortunately don't recall. I think it probably was the choice to come back to Shreveport that was the trade he made. This was a move that made it possible for me to enter school in Shreveport, and with his retirement, made it possible for me to spend all of my school years there. It is among the many adjustments Dad and Mom made in their lives entirely for my benefit, most of which I never realized or understood until they were both gone.
